Understanding IPO Subscription Categories

  • Retail Individual Investors (RII): Individual investors applying for up to ₹2,00,000. Typically allocated 35% of the IPO in mainboard offerings.
  • Non-Institutional Investors (NII/HNI): Individual investors applying for more than ₹2,00,000. Typically allocated 15% of the IPO. Divided into sNII (₹2-10 lakh) and bNII (above ₹10 lakh).
  • Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIB): Mutual funds, insurance companies, FIIs, and banks. Typically allocated 50% of the IPO. High QIB subscription is considered a strong positive signal.

How to Read Subscription Numbers

  • 1x subscription: Exactly the number of shares offered have been applied for — fully subscribed
  • 5x subscription: 5 times more applications than shares available — oversubscribed
  • 0.5x subscription: Only half the shares have been applied for — under-subscribed
  • Higher subscription = Lower allotment probability for individual investors

What Subscription Data Tells You

Subscription patterns evolve over the 3-day bidding period. Day 1 typically shows low numbers, Day 2 picks up significantly, and Day 3 (final day) often sees a surge — especially in the QIB category, as institutions tend to bid on the last day.

A strong QIB subscription (above 10x) historically correlates with positive listing performance. However, very high retail subscription (above 15-20x) may result in low allotment for individual investors.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is subscription data updated?

Exchanges release subscription data multiple times during the day — typically at 10:00 AM, 12:00 PM, 5:00 PM, and 7:00 PM IST. We update our data twice daily.

Does high subscription guarantee good listing?

Not always, but historically IPOs with total subscription above 10x have had a higher probability of listing at a premium. QIB subscription is generally considered a more reliable indicator than retail subscription.
